The fall 1998 the Ioffe Institute has celebrated its 80 year Jubilee. The largest research center in Russia was founded by Abram Ioffe in 1918 in the city where worked many years Alfred Nobel and his father. Many world-known scientists, some Nobel Prize winners has participated in the first-rate event of scientific life in Russia. Along with a ceremonial session at the St Petersburg Scientific Center, the International Conference has been held at the Ioffe Institute and its Lyceum new building.

25 years Anniversary of Department for Optoelectronics
at the Electrical Engineering University, St Petersburg Russia
The Department of Optoelectronics has been created at the Electrical Engineering University as a base department for the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1973. The staff of Professors and Lecturers consists of active scientists with world-known and nation-known names in Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics, Semiconductor Technology and Optics. The first graduation of new Engineers with a strong background in the mentioned areas of science took place in 1977.
International Workshop on Optoelectronics was held in St Petersburg on 05 November, 1998. There were presented tens of reports from graduates and their research groups on actual topics of Optolelectronics, Physics, Semiconductor Materials Science. The attendees came from Russia, France, Germany, Sweden.
